A Dream on the Knoll
The program for this project was the creation of a net-zero energy home, with a whimsical nod to the creativity of our client’s family. We worked closely with our landscape architecture associates on the seamless integration and flow of indoor and outdoor spaces. The community for which the home was designed has strict design guidelines and this particular design definitely pushed the envelope- at the same time it significantly exceeded their requirements for site sensitivity and use of local and vernacular materials.
While we always design with the idea of seamless transitions between the interior environment and the natural landscape, this particular work carried that approach to a beautiful conclusion. Making full use of our 3D terrain modeling capability, we studied a number of possible site configurations, and in collaboration with the landscape team created a plan that fully addressed the desires of our client.
The turret design is a tribute to a cherished family member, with the main house and guest wing joined by a lower courtyard. It was important in this design to have spaces that supported gatherings of friends and also provided the ability for residents and guests to enjoy personal and uninterrupted privacy.
This was to be our clients last home, and with the exception of access to the upper level of the turret, this is a universal, accessible design.
